Python Development Professional

The language that powers automation, security tooling and AI.

Course overview

The Python Development Professional course takes you from first syntax to scripts that hold up under real use. It covers the language itself, then moves into the areas where Python earns its reputation — automation, file and network work, APIs and data handling — with a strong emphasis throughout on writing code that other people can read and trust. It is a practical course for people who need Python as a tool, not a tour of the language for its own sake.

Who this course is for

This course is designed for the following groups. If you are not sure whether you fit, ask us — a short conversation is more useful than a longer guess.

  • Beginners who want a serious first programming language
  • IT staff who need to automate repetitive work
  • Analysts and administrators moving into scripting
  • Developers from other languages who want Python specifically
  • Security practitioners who need Python for tooling and scripting

What you will learn

  • Python syntax, data types, control flow and functions, from first principles
  • Writing and structuring modules and small packages
  • File handling, directories and working with structured data (JSON, CSV)
  • Network scripting: HTTP requests, sockets and basic client automation
  • Working with REST APIs, including authentication and error handling
  • Error handling, logging and the habits that make scripts reliable
  • Testing with pytest and why even small scripts deserve tests
  • Version control with Git as part of normal development work

Curriculum

The course is taught in the module order below. Each module mixes explanation with hands-on work before moving on to the next.

  1. Python Fundamentals
  2. Working with Databases
  3. Control Flow & Logic Building
  4. Python for Automation
  5. Functions & Modular Programming
  6. Web Development with Flask
  7. Data Structures
  8. REST APIs
  9. Object-Oriented Programming
  10. Professional Development Practices
  11. File Handling & Exception Management
  12. Capstone Project

Tools and technologies

Everything used in the course is either free, open source, or available on a free tier suitable for learning. You will install and configure each of these during the course, not just watch someone else use them.

  • Python 3
  • Visual Studio Code or any modern editor
  • venv for isolated environments
  • pip and requirements files
  • Git and GitHub for version control
  • requests, pathlib, argparse, json, csv from the standard library
  • pytest for testing

Prerequisites

We would rather you arrive prepared than arrive surprised. These are the things you should already be comfortable with before the first session.

  • Comfort using a computer and installing software
  • Willingness to work in a command line
  • No prior programming experience required
  • Basic file and folder navigation skills

Hands-on labs, CTFs and projects

Most of the course is spent on machines. The work below is what turns each topic from something you have read about into something you can actually do.

  • Automate a multi-step file operation that would otherwise take hours
  • Build a small command-line tool with argument parsing and help text
  • Query a public REST API and process the results
  • Write tests for an existing script and refactor it to pass
  • Produce a small, complete project suitable for a portfolio

Learning outcomes

When you finish this course, these are the things you should be able to do without looking them up. Anything you cannot yet do, the trainer will help you with during the final project review.

  • Read and write Python confidently at an intermediate level
  • Automate routine file, directory and network tasks
  • Consume REST APIs and handle their errors cleanly
  • Structure code so it can be tested and maintained
  • Use Git for everyday version control
  • Approach a new scripting problem with a clear method

Career paths

This course supports the roles below. We do not make placement claims or guarantee outcomes — what you do with the skills is up to you — but these are the job titles that most often ask for what this course teaches.

  • Python developer
  • Automation engineer
  • DevOps or platform engineer (scripting side)
  • Security automation specialist
  • Data analyst with a scripting focus

Frequently asked questions

Yes, this is designed as a first serious language for people with no prior programming experience. You will need to be comfortable with installing software and using a command line, but the course starts from the very first line of Python and builds up carefully.

Free tutorials teach syntax. This course teaches you to write Python that holds up in real use — structured, tested, readable and maintainable. The final project and the code review feedback are the parts that most people cannot get on their own, and they are what make the difference in a portfolio.

Very. Python is the working language of a great deal of security tooling — from parsing logs to automating routine checks to writing small utilities that save the team hours a week. Many of our students take this course alongside or after our security courses.

Most students move into either Foundations of Artificial Intelligence or a security specialisation. Python is the tool; the direction you take it in depends on the work you want to do. We are happy to talk through the options during the course.
